Judy Devlin Hashman, who won the all-England badminton singles championships 10 times, more than any other player, man or woman, died on Monday. Before badminton established a world championship or joined the Olympics, the All England Open Badminton Championships was the sport’s pinnacle. Hashman won the women’s singles title in that event for the first time in 1954 at age 18. Her 10 singles titles are the most for any player. She also won seven women’s doubles titles, six of them with her sister Susan Devlin, later known as Susan Peard.

CNN —Vanessa Carlton took some time to celebrate professional hockey player John Carlson who plays for the Washington Capitals over the weekend, in honor of his achievement of playing 1,000 league games. The Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter appeared on the National Hockey League team’s X page Saturday morning, in a video performing her 2002 hit song “A Thousand Miles” with updated lyrics in recognition of Carlson – who is known affectionately as “Carly” to fans. In the clip, Carlton sits at the piano and keys out the famous notes of her millennial ballad, singing about Carlson’s 2018 Stanley Cup win and his “shot like thunder.”At the end of her performance, Carlton congratulates Carlson on his 1,000-game feat and cheers “Go Caps!” in a moment of hockey fan appreciation. In response to the crash, Fort Smith Health Centre activated its mass casualty protocol around 8:50 a.m. on Tuesday, according to Northwest Territories Health and Social Services Authority. The crash also drew responses from the Royal Canadian Mounted Patrol, the Canadian Rangers and the Royal Canadian Air Force. Investigators with the Northwest Territories coroner’s office and the Transportation Safety Board were also sent to Fort Smith following the crash. Following the crash Tuesday morning, Fort Smith officials asked to stay away from the crash site to allow officials to respond. “Please be advised that an aviation incident occurred this morning,” the town of Fort Smith said in a post on Facebook.

CNN —Three people are dead and two others were injured during a shooting early Sunday morning in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, law enforcement officials said. The Winnipeg Police Service said in a news release the shooting happened just after 4 a.m. nearly a mile west of the city’s downtown. Officers arriving at the scene found five victims “with injuries consistent with being shot,” according to the release. The victims’ identities have not been released, and police said the investigation into the shooting is ongoing. “The Winnipeg Police Service Forensic Services Unit will be on scene for an extended period due to the gravity of this incident,” officials said.
